Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/10246Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease, affects approximately 60% of the global population, with severe cases in 24% of individuals. This review investigated its relationship with atherosclerotic disease, the leading cause of mortality worldwide, accounting for 32% of annual deaths. The SCIELO, PubMed and BVS platforms were consulted, in addition to data from CFO and IBGE. Of the 68 articles selected, 41 were analyzed and 27 were discarded, complemented by 4 books. The results show that periodontitis participates in all phases of atherosclerotic disease, from endothelial dysfunction to plaque rupture and thrombotic events. Cytokines such as IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6, released during periodontitis, amplify vascular inflammation, while bacteria and their byproducts, such as LPS, aggravate atherosclerosis. Epidemiological and interventional studies demonstrate that periodontal treatment reduces systemic inflammatory markers and improves cardiovascular outcomes. Dentists play a crucial role in prevention, identifying periodontitis early and referring patients for cardiovascular evaluation. Health education, for both patients and professionals, is essential to raise awareness of the relationship between oral and general health. Integration between dentistry and cardiology is urgently needed, with multidisciplinary and personalized approaches to reduce the impact of periodontitis on cardiovascular health.
