Acesso em:https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/4233The GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) is the method of geophysical investigation, which uses electromagnetic waves to scan with high resolution the shallow subsurface of the earth, the use of this method is recurrent for archaeological investigations. The objective of this work was to carry out an archaeological investigation using radar with the purpose of finding structures that have been buried or lost in time. The necessity of applying this technique arose from the interest of the administration of the Convent of Mercedarians in carrying out an archaeological study of the place. The building is in the city of Belém, state of Pará, and was built in the 18th century in 1748 by Mercedarian religious coming from Ecuador. Throughout its history, the convent went through several uses, being used for most of its time for customs-related activities from the year 1796, and during these changes of activities, it suffered several modifications of its initial structure. The use of GPR allowed the visualization of structures that were buried during the renovations, such as the well located in its courtyard, and gave evidence of the presence of archaeological material from the Brazilian colonial period. These results highlight the importance of using this method for the understanding of our history. The easy handling of the equipment and the quick response encourage the use of GPR as an essential tool for archeology aiming at greater assertiveness in an eventual excavation. Keywords: GPR.
