Therefore, in search of decent housing and within the limits of their financial situation, part of the population opts for the self-construction of their homes. This affects the overall quality of the buildings, as the use of qualified labor in the planning and management of construction reduces the occurrence of building pathologies which, when present, require constant repairs to prevent the worsening of the situation. This study aimed to collect information about pathological manifestations present in houses built through self-construction practices in the Jardim Corcetti neighborhood, in Varginha – Minas Gerais. To carry out the study, a standardized questionnaire was used to collect socioeconomic data from participants, characterize the dwellings, analyze the presence of pathological manifestations, and assess the participants’ perception regarding the need to repair these manifestations. For a deeper understanding of the issue, a case study was also conducted on three self-built homes to identify existing pathological manifestations. As a result, the research highlights that self-builders chose to hire outsourced labor for later renovations in search of better results than those achieved on their own, and that the interviewees tended to consider repairing aesthetic problems more important than addressing structural issues.
