However, manywomen do not undergo this exam regularly, which increases the risk of late diagnosis nonadherence, some such as lack of knowledge about the importance of the exam, lack of access to health services, financial barriers, fear, stigma, lack of time and misinformation. This study aimed to investigate the reasons why women in the city of Altamira-PA do not undergo the Pap smear (PCCU). A cross-sectional, escriptive study with a quantitative and qualitative approach was carried out regarding the obstacles faced in carrying out the cytopathological examination. It was identified that the lack of knowledge about cervical cancer and the exam itself, together with negative experiences related to the procedure, are associated with non-adherence. Thus, this study aimed to present an analysis proposal regarding the reasons why many women in the municipality of Altamira, in Pará, do not adhere to preventive screening for cervical cancer.
