This study analyzed the efficacy of various screening strategies, ranging from direct fundoscopy to the use of teleophthalmology and artificial intelligence (AI). Results indicate that diagnostic decentralization, supported by portable technologies and machine learning algorithms, demonstrates high accuracy and cost-effectiveness, significantly reducing unnecessary referrals and waiting lists. However, technical implementation faces critical barriers, such as infrastructure limitations, a shortage of trained professionals, and low patient health literacy, factors that compromise adherence to preventive programs. Future perspectives point toward the consolidation of automated diagnostic systems and clinical data integration, though this requires logistical support to ensure access to treatment.
