The research was carried out in the municipalities of Augusto Corrêa and Bragança, where the shipyards were mapped and the local criteria for classifying the vessels were analyzed, as well as the social relations involved in production, work and learning the trade. To achieve these objectives, 18 shipyards were visited in the two municipalities, and 34 semi-structured interviews were conducted between the months of September and December 2014, covering 74 permanent and day-labor workers. This number represents approximately 46% of shipbuilding carpenters in the region, which provided a broad view of the reality of the sector. The study identified nine main types of vessels used in the region: hull or barge, canoe, caico, rabeta, dinghy (or small boat), boat, biana, speedboat and catamaran. Some of these vessels originated in other states, such as the biana (Maranhão) and the speedboat (Ceará), but were incorporated into the local naval culture due to their functionality and adaptability to the region's fishing environment. Although environmental and research agencies classify the fishing fleet on the northern coast into seven categories — riding boat, canoe, motorized canoe, small boat, medium-sized boat, industrial boat and ice boat — it was found that fishermen and carpenters have difficulty recognizing this official categorization, as they use their own criteria based on practical aspects, such as the type of wood, hull shape and purpose of the vessel. The research also revealed the hierarchical structure within the shipyards, where, in addition to the chief shipwright, there are other professionals performing essential functions, such as carpenter's assistants, caulkers (responsible for sealing the vessels), fiber builders, electricians, mechanics, painters and letter openers. This division of labor demonstrates the complexity of the artisanal shipbuilding process, which involves several stages and specializations. The data collected indicate that, in 2014, the shipyards in the region built approximately 163 new vessels and repaired 326. Shipwrighting in the region remains essentially artisanal, although the use of some electronic equipment helps in certain stages of the process. However, there is no formal technical training for carpenters, and knowledge is passed on in a traditional way, usually from father to son or between close family members. However, there is little interest among young people in continuing this tradition, which may impact the continuity of the trade in the long term. Another relevant aspect identified in the study was the precariousness of the shipyard infrastructure, which does not provide adequate conditions for the full functioning of 9 activities. In addition, insufficient use of personal protective equipment (PPE) was observed, increasing the risk of workplace accidents. The lack of safety measures reflects the lack of specific regulation and supervision for shipbuilding, which compromises the protection of workers. Although shipbuilding is legally recognized as a fishing activity, professionals in the sector continue to face great invisibility, both in relation to the implementation of specific public policies and the valorization of their traditional knowledge. In view of this scenario, the annual monitoring of shipbuilding production in the municipality of Bragança revealed the economic and cultural relevance of the sector, highlighting the urgent need for initiatives that promote the restructuring and modernization of shipyards, ensuring better working conditions, safety and incentives for the continuity of this trade. To carry out the research project, I had to visit different shipyards in the Bragança and Augusto Corrêa region. We made a geographic map of the region and the shipyards in these two municipalities, which allowed me to better understand their realities, challenges and knowledge instilled in the daily lives of these master carpenters and other professions that exist in the shipyard environment, and to build a mutual relationship of dialogue, respect and trust. One of the most interesting facts is that no shipyard carpenter retires as a carpenter; they retire as a fisherman or a farmer, in other words, their profession does not guarantee them a retirement. Regarding health benefits, none of the carpenters who work in the region have health insurance or even any medical assistance. Also considering the aspect of work safety, the use of personal protective equipment was not observed, in other words, they work under inadequate conditions, most of them wearing a pair of boots and a glove on their hands. In this context, shipwrights build their vessels even with few structural and financial resources, but based on their knowledge and practices. They seek strategies to acquire raw materials (wood) and financial resources to begin construction, either by making agreements with fishing bosses or by purchasing materials and making payment only after the vessel is sold; in other cases, they take out loans with other carpenters.
