Recent studies indicate that prolonged exposure to mercury can result in hypertension and other cardiovascular problems, with a dose-response relationship observed between mercury levels and blood pressure. In addition, there is a clear association between Hg exposure and endothelial damage. In the context of Terra do Meio, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between hair mercury concentration and blood pressure in a potentially exposed riverine population. Hair samples from 182 individuals from the Iriri, Riozinho do Anfrísio and Xingu Extractive Reserves (RESEX), aged between 18 and 70 years, were collected to measure total mercury (HgT) levels, and socioeconomic, demographic and clinical- epidemiological data were recorded. Blood pressure measurement followed the Brazilian Hypertension Guidelines in force during the study, and the cutoff was systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90 mmHg. The results showed that systolic blood pressure (SBP) is significantly associated with mercury levels, with a higher prevalence of SBP above 120 mmHg in individuals with mercury levels greater than 2 μg/g. In contrast, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) showed a significant association only up to 3 μg/g, suggesting that SBP is more sensitive to mercury toxicity.
