Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/jspui/handle/prefix/6510This article aims to investigate the developments of the experience involving Chinese labor in the Maracassumé colony, located on the border between Pará and Maranhão. These workers were hired by members of the Maranhense Mining Company in 1855 with the aim of engaging in the exploitation of gold mines in the mentioned region and performed various types of labor activities, such as building huts and carrying objects on their shoulders. Their presence in the province sparked a series of debates, which will also be analyzed, regarding the (dis)advantages of their labor compared to other foreign workers and enslaved blacks. Amidst discourses that aimed to encourage or hinder Chinese immigration to Brazil, different perspectives on what constituted free labor in the 19th century can be found – a theme that encompassed discussions about race, land occupation, and national identity. Finally, an attempt is made to map some sociability networks established between these immigrants and other inhabitants of the province through different types of relationships formed during their stay, whether they were tense or supportive.Acesso AbertoImigração chinesaTrabalho livreSéculo XIXMaranhãoChinese immigrationFree labor19th CenturyCNPQ::CIENCIAS HUMANAS::HISTORIAA imigração chinesa no Brasil Oitocentista: o caso do Maranhão (1850-1860)Trabalho de Curso - Graduação - Artigo
