Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/10230Although bacterial plaque is the main etiological factor, the progression of periodontal disease is associated with other factors, such as smoking, age, diabetes, and genetic predisposition. As it is an immunoinflammatory condition, its progression can also be influenced by several psychosocial factors, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, since these conditions modulate the immune system and human behavior. The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review on the association between periodontal disease and stress. An analysis of articles published between 2014 and 2024 was carried out in the SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. A total of 33 articles were identified, of which 14 were selected to compose this study as they fit within its scope. It was observed that there are two mechanisms that highlight the relationship between these two pathological conditions: the biological pathway, in which altered physiological mechanisms make the periodontium more susceptible to the progression of periodontal disease, and the behavioral pathway, where neglect of oral hygiene habits occurs, increasing the exposure of the periodontium to bacterial aggression.
