Acesso em: .https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/6073Trauma brain injury (TBI) is an acquired brain injury, which occurs when sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. It is one of the most frequent causes of morbidity and mortality in young adults, and may have a serious impact on the quality of life in case of sequelae, constituting a serious public health and social security problem, since the resulting lesions usually compromise the motor and cognitive functions of individuals affected. In Brazil, the occurrence of brain injury trauma is estimated in approximately half a million victims who require hospitalization every year. Policies for education in traffic can change this panorama. Scholars point out several avenues for traffic education to be effectively carried out in schools, through projects, partnerships with competent bodies,promoting diversified activities that assist educators in this task, in addition to the educational campaigns promoted by the government and other institutions. OBJECTIVE: To promote an analysis through interrogation of the knowledge of a group of students of the High School of the public network of Belém on preventive health in the combat to the automobile accidents that lead to traumatic brain injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study using a multiple choice questionnaire and discursive questions applied before and after an expository lecture about the importance of the use of safety equipment used in automotive vehicles, carried out in classrooms of 04 Public Schools, with 350 students duly enrolled in the High School in the Municipality of Belém. RESULTS: Of the 350 participating students, 18% have a National Driver's License, of which 22.2% are in category A, 11.1% in category B and 66.6% in category AB. 2% were already involved in some traffic accident, of which 1.2% are male and 0.8% female. 50.3% of the students know someone who was already a victim of a traffic accident, of which 22.9% recovered completely and 27.4% had some sequelae. Of these, 20% believe that seat belts are not essential in intercity buses, and 11.7% stated that there is no need to use seat belts by passengers occupying rear seats of cars, while 26.6% people consider it unnecessary to use helmets while driving motorcycles. Of the total, 96% stated that the educational action carried out by the project team improves behavior habits in traffic and 4% that may cause change. In addition, they questioned about the understanding of the approached and dynamic subject used, 97.2% classified as good or excellent and 2.8% as regular. Traumatic brain injury is an increasingly frequent neurological urgency in our milieu, preventive policies have a relevant role for awareness and consequent change in this picture.
