Although the number of studies on conventional water supply systems has grown considerably, research focusing on Collective Alternative Water Supply Systems (CAWSS) remains limited, despite their widespread use by communities seeking alternative drinking water sources. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of presumptive microplastic particles in a Collective Alternative Water Supply System used for human consumption in the municipality of Tucuruí, Pará, Brazil, by characterizing their concentration, morphology, color, and size classes. This applied research adopted a quantitative, in which numerical data were obtained and analyzed regarding the concentration, morphology, coloration, and size classes of particles presumably consistent with microplastics, approach through a case study. Water samples were collected directly from the public water collection point in triplicate using glass containers under contamination control procedures. Particle identification was performed through filtration, Nile Red staining, and fluorescence microscopy, following established technical protocols for microplastic screening. Presumptive microplastic particles were detected in all analyzed samples, with a mean concentration of 12.2 ± 0.6 particles·L−1, predominance of fibers (52.5%), transparent and blue particles, and a higher frequency of particles ranging from 100 to 250 μm. The findings demonstrate that the occurrence of these particles is not restricted to conventional water supply systems but is also present in alternative water sources used by the population.
