Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9305With industrial and population growth, the use of polymers derived from fossil sources has become increasingly constant, intensifying the consequences of the improper disposal of these materials in the environment. Thus, researchers seek alternative sources, such as biodegradable polymers, to mitigate the damage caused by synthetic polymers. In this context, ariá starch (Goeppertia allouia) emerges, a Non-Conventional Food Plant (PANC) from the Amazon region. Therefore, this work aimed to produce and characterize biodegradable films made from ariá starch. The films were manufactured by the casting method, using 2 g of starch, distilled water, and glycerol as a plasticizer at concentrations of 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45% (relative to the starch mass). The samples were characterized regarding their physicochemical, barrier, and biodegradability properties, morphology (SEM), functional groups (FTIR), crystallinity (XRD), and mechanical properties. The films exhibited smooth, homogeneous surfaces without the presence of cracks. It was found that the increase in glycerol content raised the solubility from 27.6% to 38.06% and the moisture from 17.8% to 28.33%. Meanwhile, the degree of swelling varied according to the immersion time and the plasticizer concentration. FTIR and XRD analyses indicated that there was no significant chemical alteration in the matrix, confirming type C crystallinity for the starch. In the mechanical tests, it was noted that the increase in glycerol concentration (from 25% to 45%) promoted a reduction in tensile strength from 3.81 MPa to 0.91 MPa, as well as a decrease in elongation at break, which varied from 68.51% to 27.16%. Finally, the films degraded completely in 16 days in soil. It is concluded that ariá starch presented viable characteristics for the development of biodegradable polymeric films.
