The Anthropocene is characterized by the intense destructive capacity of human actions, driven by industrial production, submerging society in a culture of consumption and pollution. Unlimited economic growth is unsustainable as it implies the improper use of natural resources, resulting in a series of socio-environmental impacts, such as the massive generation of solid waste. The effects resulting from the improper disposal of these wastes are evidenced by soil pollution, water contamination, sedimentation, floods, visual pollution, the proliferation of disease vectors, and foul odors. The present study aimed to analyze the understanding of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year high school students regarding solid waste in the consumer society and how this influences their attitudes and disposal practices in daily life. To this end, it sought to investigate the relevance of the topic within the school environment, evaluate students' understanding of basic concepts about waste and its management, and identify gaps between discourse and practical application. The research was conducted at the Educational Institute of the State of Pará (IEEP), involving the administration of ten questionnaires for each school year, totaling thirty students. Additionally, a biology teacher and a school service assistant were interviewed. The results highlighted the lack of an approach in school regarding sustainability and solid waste, consequently creating a gap in the development of students in relation to these topics and environmental awareness. Concerning their understanding, it was found that students have superficial knowledge of fundamental concepts related to waste and its management. Furthermore, regarding their practices, although students recognize their responsibility for the waste they produce, incorrect disposal practices are still common. In conclusion, students are not equipped in their curricula with the necessary reflective capacity to understand the unsustainable reality of solid waste, much less to recognize the impactful reality of rampant and unsustainable consumption. This gap deprives students of critical reflection on how waste is generated and disposed of in consumer society.Acesso AbertoResíduos sólidosSustentabilidadeEstudantes do ensino médioLixo - eliminaçãoEliminação de resíduosSustentabilidade e meio ambienteEducação ambientalInstituto Educacional Estadual do ParáCNPQ::CIENCIAS BIOLOGICAS::ECOLOGIA::ECOLOGIA APLICADAInsustentabilidade e a produção de resíduos sólidos: um estudo com alunos do ensino médio do Instituto Educacional Estadual do Pará (IEEP)Trabalho de Curso - Graduação - MonografiaAttribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazil
