In addition to cultural and social aspects, food is also infl uenced by the socioeconomic perspective. Thinking about food in Belém do Pará, in the late 19th century, is to perceive food as a factor of social diff erentiation and who were the people who frequented the city's grocery stores and auctions. In this sense, the objective of this work is to understand the eating habits and customs of the city of Belém do Pará based on the newspaper Diário de Notícias, within the time frame of 1881 to 1890, and to understand the social relations established through food, and through this, to identify the subjects and spaces of purchase and sale of food products. The data obtained was analyzed and interpreted based on the pertinent literature. From the analysis of the advertisements, it was observed that the wealthier classes had a very diverse diet in terms of food products available in warehouses and grocers, including imported products, in addition to frequenting places that sell more refi ned and expensive products, such as coff ee shops and restaurants.
