Having a fundamental role in cell growth and differentiation, as well as in the normal formation and maintenance of the heart, lungs, eyes and other organs. Access to vitamin A through supplements is an important strategy to avoid the deficiency of this fat-soluble vitamin in humans, especially for those who do not reach their daily rates through food. However, vitamin A neurotoxicity has been demonstrated for a long time as a possible side effect of inadvertent or medically recommended consumption of vitamin A. In turn, the present study aims to analyze the electrocorticographic and electrocardiographic profile by administering supraphysiological doses of Vitamin A in Wistar rats by means of recording patterns of frequency of brain oscillations and cardiac activity through the Electrocardiogram-ECG. Thus, the research consisted of an experiment involving two phases: Experiment 1: Electrocorticographic analysis of wave activity in the Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta and Gamma frequency bands; and Experiment 2: Electrocardiogram analysis, both, after 3, 7 and 14 days of treatment with vitamin A at a dose of 50,000UI/kg day V.O. Thus, the present study observed important evidence on brain and cardiac alterations caused by high doses of vitamin A. Exposure to supraphysiological doses of Vitamin A (Retinol) caused alterations in the Central Nervous System. The oscillations sharply altered the strength of the brainwave bands in the frequency range from 1 to 12 Hz. The increase in heart rate, the increase in the amplitude of the QRS complex, the reduction of the Q-T interval and the reduction of the R-R interval, represented changes in the cardiac activity, resulting from intoxication by supraphysiological doses of Vitamin A, where these alterations occurred, possibly, as a consequence of the increase in the serum concentration of calcium. However, more studies are needed to better understand the changes caused in neurons and cardiomyocytes.
