Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9139The study of modalization, a linguistic phenomenon related to semantics and pragmatics, allows for understanding how speakers express attitudes of certainty, doubt, obligation, or prohibition through their utterances. This research aimed to analyze the epistemic and deontic modalities in the speech of characters from the films O Auto da Compadecida (2000) and O Auto da Compadecida 2 (2024), considering how these linguistic resources create meaning effects and reveal social and cultural aspects of the represented context. The study adopts a qualitative, descriptive-interpretative approach, using a corpus of ten selected utterances accompanied by corresponding screenshots. The theoretical framework draws on Palmer (2001), Saussure (2006) Neves (2011), Koch (2021), Authier-Revuz (2019), and Orlandi (2020). Results showed that the deontic modality is associated with orders, prohibitions, and authority impositions, reflecting power relations and social norms, while the epistemic modality manifests in expressions of doubt, belief, and uncertainty, highlighting subjectivity and popular resistance, especially in the speech of João Grilo and Chicó. It was observed that both modalities, by articulating verbal language and visual elements, contribute to constructing meaning effects that reinforce social critique in the works. In conclusion, modalization is an essential resource for understanding how Brazilian cinema constructs meaning, reveals social tensions, and explores the relationship between morality, authority, and popular resistance, offering an interpretative reading of the represented context.
