This research is relevant because it highlights pathways for identifying strengths and weaknesses, as well as for guiding policies and improving academic management. In this regard, the theoretical framework draws on the studies of Bourdieu and Passeron (1975), Tardif (2014), Freire (1996), and Tinto (2005). The main objective is to analyze the key factors associated with student failure in the Portuguese Language and Literature program. This is an exploratory-descriptive study with a qualitative-quantitative approach; data were collected through questionnaires administered to students and faculty members, in addition to the analysis of institutional documents. The results show that students emphasize factors such as teaching methodology, balancing work and study, and lack of time as direct influences on course failures. However, it is noteworthy that the proportion of students who have never failed compared to those who have does not present a significant difference in this research, indicating that, although relevant, the problem tends to be occasional.
