Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/jspui/handle/prefix/7384The evolution of materials in the industry has been constant throughout history, with periods dedicated to the research of new materials and their possible applications. In this context, performing mechanical tests plays a fundamental role in understanding the mechanical properties, aiming for the best application in engineering projects. The present work aimed to design and build a prototype of a portable and low-cost mechanical testing machine, intended for three-point flexural strength testing of ceramic materials, with didactic purposes. The prototype was designed using 3D modeling software (SketchUP), and during the fabrication of its structural components, mostly reused materials were utilized, sourced from mechanical workshops, scrapyards, among others, with the goal of making the project more economically accessible. Using the principle of moment, all the necessary measurements and masses were calculated to ensure the generation of the minimum force required for flexural strength tests on ceramic materials, more specifically red ceramics (roof tiles and bricks), as established by the Standards ABNT NBR 15310/2009 and ABNT NBR 15270/2017. The test specimens used in validating the results of the equipment and the testing method were based on the ASTM C674-13/2018 standard, which sets the parameters for performing flexural tests on ceramic test specimens. To validate the prototype's results, they were compared with those from a commercial universal testing machine, InterMetric model iM50. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was the statistical tool used to verify if there were significant differences in the means between the groups, followed by the Tukey test with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that this work achieved its objectives in designing and building a prototype of a threepoint Flexural Strength Testing Machine (MRF), meeting the project goals with an error margin ranging from 2.34% to 7.64%. The comparison of the tests indicated that the prototype is capable of generating useful data for educational purposes.
