Acesso em:.http://bdm.ufpa.br/jspui/handle/prefix/1796The coastal zone is one of the most physically and socioeconomically vulnerable environments, and coastal erosion is a major cause of environmental and economic impacts. About 40% of the Brazilian coast has serious erosion problems, and in the State of Pará where 45% of the population inhabits the coastal zone, it is estimated that 60% of the coast is in an erosion process. This scenario includes the Pará River Estuary, a region of great importance, containing the metropolis of Belém, and an industrial-port complex where much of the state's production and commerce circulates. This work evaluated the vulnerability and risk of coastal erosion in the Pará River Estuary. To that end, existing methodologies were adapted by adjusting the parameters of analysis to the physiographic characteristics of the Amazonian estuarine environment. A vulnerability classification table was set up with seven variables: Geology, Habitats, Slope, Coastline Rate of Change, Maximum Current Speed, Maximum Wave Height, and Tidal Amplitude. In order to define weights to the variables, a hierarchical analysis process (AHP) was used. The input data used were orbital images of the Landsat satellite, digital elevation model ALOS-AW3D30, Geological Map, IBGE statistical grid and database of the SAO charts of Foz do Amazonas. The results show that at least half of the coast of the Pará Estuary presents a low vulnerability to erosion, and this is mainly due to the progradational or stability tendency of these regions. Just under half the coast of the Pará River Estuary has a moderate or higher degree of vulnerability to coastal erosion. This would be associated with the retrogradation of these segments and the occurrence of sandy beaches, tidal flats, urban areas, and artificial constructions. The analysis of the risk trend shows that only Belém, Barcarena, Colares and Vigia present significant portions of coast presenting moderate or higher risk tendencies. The other municipalities have little or no expressive percentages. The methodology used in this study proved to be a powerful tool, and the results were satisfactory and met the objectives of the research.
