As a general objective, it investigates how the practices of preservation and conservation of collections occur in university and municipal libraries. As specific objectives, it describes the degradation factors that impact on the preservation and conservation of the collection, highlights the importance of preserving information in paper documents and identifies the difficulties of university and municipal libraries to employ actions and activities in the preservation and preservation conservation of the printed collection of libraries and collections in general. The research is based on a literature review and in terms of methodological procedures, it is exploratory, with a qualitative approach, based on field research, having as universe university and municipal libraries in the State of Pará. Data were collected on the practice of preserving collections in these institutions, with observations and interviews with librarians working in these libraries. As a result, it presents, above all, the way in which preservation and conversation occur in libraries. It considers that even though there are policies and instruments that guide preservation and conversation, it is up to each library to determine practices and procedures that meet its specificity.
