In a context where the consequences of global warming and climate change are a reality, the world's governments, private companies, research groups and people turn to this theme in hopes of improvements to reverse the catastrophic situation that the use predatory nature, made by man, led all mankind. Despite this concern, there are few environmental assessment, environmental impact reports and management plans and Environmental education performed research on the state of Pará, mainly in metropolitan areas of Belém, which is included in the island of Cotijuba. The islands of Belém do not receive adequate attention from the municipal, state and federal, with the island still very lacking in infrastructure, as can be seen in the accumulation of trash and lack of regular garbage collection. Given all these issues on the islands of Bethlehem, this paper aims to analyze the degree of environmental awareness of boaters and residents of the island of cotijuba (metropolitan area of Belém) in relation to the issue of garbage on the island and the reasons that favor its accumulation and misuse of the medium. The information for the study were obtained between the months of October to December of 2010. The method of research was done on semi-structured, collaborative and analysis of the potential for weaving units. The character of the interviews was qualitative. Was heard a total of six individuals from these four persons were males and two females of a group of individuals that comprised between boaters and residents. To keep the identity of respondents, an agreement was made, in which his name would be lying in secrecy. The boatmen, in general, work at the crossing for a period of 10 to 20 years. When asked if they had recycle bins on your boat, the answer was positive, however, according to these, the majority of passengers do not seek them, throwing their garbage into the river directly. The largest accumulation of waste occurred from the increased frequency of visitation and urban development of the island. Development of tourism without planning, they favor a higher accumulation of garbage on the island that can cause many bad consequences such as favoring disease transmission, as well as water pollution due to toxins released as a byproduct of the degradation of solid waste. And disturb ecosystems and lowland beach surrounding the island, influencing its dynamics. To improve the quality of life and development the residents themselves suggested some practices, such as improvement in basic education, regularization of land and garbage collection, a tourism development plan effectively as well as continued work for Environmental education. If these proposals are taken into consideration, it is believed that the situation of the island can be reversed.
