This process is the result of economic and political changes reflected in the social environment, which will be analyzed in this research in three moments. The first, prior to the construction of the Hospital da Ordem Terceira, with the aim of understanding the historical context since the creation of the Companhia de Comércio (1749), and social and political events, as well as the epidemics that promoted the founding of the Hospital da Ordem. The second, from the foundation to the end of the Belle Époque, that is, from 1867 to 1914, an interval between the change of government from imperial to republic, and the worsening of epidemics. And, in the third period, in mid 1964, during the military regime, seeking to understand the decharacterization, and how this event influenced symbolic perceptions, cultural load and architectural conformity that, in some way, contribute or not to its identification as patrimony.
