Its discovery dates back to the 19th century when the French chemist Michel Eugène Chevreul isolated this substance from muscle tissue. Once produced, creatine is released into the bloodstream and transported to tissues throughout the body, including the brain. In the brain, creatine plays an important role in energy supply. In this regard, the aim of this work is to analyze existing studies on the effect of creatine supplementation on brain function, seeking to better understand the potential benefits of this supplementation for the brain. This is a systematic literature review where a detailed and thorough search was conducted in electronic databases such as Science Direct, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), and the National Library of Medicine (PubMed). Creatine supplementation has been shown to improve cognitive function in healthy older individuals, with possible neuroprotective effects in neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Furthermore, creatine supplementation has also shown a positive impact on mental health, including disorders such as depression. Based on the analysis of existing studies on the effect of creatine supplementation on brain function, it is concluded that there is evidence of potential benefits of this supplementation for the brain.
