Objective: To evaluate the frequency of clinical and social pointers of risk for infantile mortality (death risk, mainly, between 7 days and 6 months of age), as Rumel et al. criterion in the considered low risk newborn. Method: Transversal study, in the period of may to december of 2006, random sampling, for convenience, esteem a prevalence of 20% of newborns with some of the evaluated factors of risk, considering index of significance of 95% and α of 6%, value of p<0,05 as estatisticamente significant, it was esteem sample of 250 newborns; place of the study: joint lodging of the FSCMPA’s maternity, educational hospital and reference for the high risk pregnant, greater maternity of the Eastern Amazônia; through interview with questionnaire application to the mothers whose newborns had received hospital discharge with up to 72 hours of life, therefore considered for the assistencial team as low risk newborn to identify the frequency of risk factors to infantile mortality as the criterion of Rumel et al. Results: In the evaluated period, 2738 newborns had been directed to the joint lodging, had been studied 251 newborns that had filled the inclusion criteria, of these 51% were of the feminine sex and 49% of the masculine sex; the variables of the criterion had been: borning low weight (<2.500g), presented this factor of risk to mortality 11,6% of the newborns; prematurity (37 weeks of gestation) 13,5%; fruit of unwanted pregnancy 3,6%; malformation in 0,4%; per capita familiar income < ¼ minimum wage in 29,1%; mother without companion 14,7%; two or more lesser brothers of four years of age 2,8%; maternal illiteracy 2,8%; less than 3 consultations in the prenatal had represented 13.2%, being that 3.2% of these had not been to no consultation of prenatal; the unemployment of the head of family 8,4%; maternal age less than 18 years 17,5%. The percentage of newborns that had filled the call criterion of risk for the death between 7 days and 6 months of age, established for Rumel et al. was of 37,5%, being that the isolated presence of one of the factors biggest represented 60.6% and the presence of two or more of the lesser factors was 39,4%. Of that they had filled the criterion, 42.5% had hospital discharge after 48 hours from life and that were not fit in the criterion of Rumel et al. 75,7% had discharge less than 48 hours.
