It first addresses the historical evolution of maritime transport systems used for the movement and distribution of goods. Then, based on scientific articles and data collection, it analyzes the main propulsion arrangements currently employed — the conventional (diesel-mechanical), the diesel electric, and, more recently, the hybrid system that integrates combustion engines and electrical energy sources.
