The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of chemical treatment of natural fibers from sugarcane bagasse on the properties of polymer composites. The fibres were characterized by analysis of total soluble solids (TSS), specific mass and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The composites were manufactured manually using silicone molds and different proportions of fibers (0%, 1%, 2% and 3%). The composites were evaluated in terms of apparent specific mass, porosity, water absorption and tensile strength. The results indicated that the alkaline treatment removed impurities and increased the density of the fibers, as well as reducing porosity and water absorption in the composites. However, the treatment did not result in an increase in tensile strength, with the highest value obtained (26.246 MPa) occurring in the composite with 2% untreated fibers. The results show that sugarcane bagasse fibers can be used to develop lighter composites with lower water absorption.
