In this context, memes have consolidated as powerful instruments for the dissemination of ideas and the construction of political discourse (RECUERO, 2009). The “chair incident” involving José Luiz Datena and Pablo Marçal during the 2024 São Paulo mayoral campaign exemplifies how political events can be reinterpreted and amplified on digital platforms. This article aims to reflect on the role of memes in the construction of political and social criticism, taking the Datena and Marçal dispute as a case study. For this purpose, a qualitative approach was adopted through a bibliographic review of works published in the last years on the use of memes in Brazilian politics. The results indicate that memes not only reflect public opinion but also contribute to shaping it, influencing electoral perceptions and the public image of candidates.
