The main objective of this project was to compare the soil load capacities estimated by rational and semi-empirical methods, identifying the particularities and applications of each method. This is a case study involving a road bridge construction project located in the municipality of Goianésia do Pará, in the southeast of the state. The methodology began with a literature review, followed by data collection from the analyzed terrain, including several stages, such as SPT testing, soil profile mapping, parameter definition, and soil profile analysis. The Aoki and Velloso method (Coef. Benegas and Laprovitera) presented median results when compared to other methods; its values were the basis for comparing the other methods. Regarding the allowable lateral load, the β method had low results, while λ presented high lateral load values; when combined with the Terzaghi method, it showed the highest percentage contribution to the total load capacity. The results show variations between the methods, with some being more conservative while others showed more optimistic results. The main similarity between the methods is the distribution of their loads; the semi-empirical methods include in their formulation the calculation for tip and lateral load capacities, while the rational methods were performed with combinations. The rational α and λ methods showed higher results for soil conditions and design parameters. Thus, the study contributed to confirming the importance of knowing the soil and its parameters, as the methods can present different values when subjected to analyses of different soils and foundation types, which is important for the field of foundations in a technical sense, also serving as a basis for future studies.
