The feeling of the world as sadness, revolt and hope is a strand of modern poetry in general and the poetry of Drummond in particular. We reconstitute a cultural history of melancholy feeling in the arts and thought, with an emphasis on modernity, to constitute an image of the melancholy figured in Drummond's poetry. We use the studies of Walter Benjamin, Sigmund Freud and Jean Starobinsk.
