The city of Belém, in the state of Pará, holds a significant stock of buildings in its Historic Center of Belém (HCB), including both heritage-listed structures and buildings classified as architectural renewal, many of which are in poor conservation conditions, unused, underused, or at risk. In the traditionally commercial center of the Campina neighborhood, this issue is further aggravated by ongoing processes of social, architectural, and urban degradation, where most buildings are occupied by commercial uses on the ground floors, while upper floors are largely used as storage spaces or remain vacant. An illustrative case is an unused building located at the corner of Conselheiro João Alfredo Street and Frutuoso Guimarães Lane, in the former Largo das Mercês, classified as architectural renewal and lacking harmony with the surrounding historic context. In this regard, the objective of this study is to develop an architectural design proposal for this building that integrates harmoniously into the HCB through the introduction of residential use aimed at the popular housing market and/or social interest housing, as a strategy for urban and architectural rehabilitation. The methodological approach includes theoretical and historical research, analysis of the building and its relationship with the surrounding context, examination of the applicable legislation, and the development of the architectural intervention project.
