It is considered a key indicator of the population's health, as it reflects the social, economic and environmental conditions in which women find themselves during pregnancy. The Northeast region has had a high incidence of low birth weight newborns due to underdeveloped socioeconomic conditions. In the Xingu region, highlighting the municipality of Altamira, the infant mortality rate increased to 14.34 deaths per thousand live births in 2019. The objective of this study is to describe the characteristics of mothers and low birth weight newborns and verify possible risk factors in the municipality of Altamira do Pará. For this, the methodology used was descriptive, ecological, retrospective with a quantitative approach, using based on the collection of data provided by the Live Birth Information System (SINASC), regarding the number of low birth weights in the municipality of Altamira do Pará in the period from 2019 to 2022. The data were addressed as follows: Percentage of BPN in the municipality of Altamira; LBW percentage x number of live births; LBW maternal characteristics; characteristics of pregnancy and delivery of LBW and low birth weight newborns. After obtaining the data, graphs and tables were formulated in the Excel Program of the Microsoft office 2019 package and the Pearson Chi-square Test was performed. These analyzes were carried out in the Bioestat 5.3 program. The research found that 8% of live births in the city were low birth weight, with a tendency to increase over the 4 years. Regarding the characteristics of mothers of low birth weight newborns, the highest frequency was women between 19 and 25 years old, in a stable union, with 8 to 11 years of education, without any living children and of mixed race. There was a statistically significant difference for the variables: Age Group, Marital Status and Number of Living Children. In relation to maternal conditions during pregnancy and delivery of newborns with LBW, cesarean births were most common, with mothers without any previous pregnancy, who started prenatal care in the first trimester, with a gestational age of 32 to 36 weeks and who They didn't have any miscarriages. The variables Previous pregnancies, First Consultation, Number of consultations, Length of pregnancy and Abortion showed a statistically significant difference. Among low birth weight newborns, the majority were female, weighing between 2000g and 2499g, with an Apgar score of 8 or more in the first minute and 9 in the fifth minute. The incidence of low birth weight in the municipality of Altamira, associated to avoidable factors, reinforces the relevance of this study. The results obtained highlight the importance of investigating in more depth considering the category of newborns considering other variables and with statistical analyses. This approach seeks to improve the quality of care offered to pregnant women and newborns, in line with the main objective of this initiative.
