Recently, with the opening of commercial exploitation of this species, and mainly the modernization of forms of commercialization, such as filleting, it has generated doubts among consumers about possible replacements of species with high commercial value, for others of lower value, which leads to commercial fraud. The present study, using the DNA barcode tool, investigated fish samples sold as “dourada” in the municipality of Breves (free market and supermarket) as well as samples from other municipalities to infer whether B. rousseauxii is the target of commercial substitutions. 54 samples were used in the present study, with a portion of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene amplified for each specimen. The results indicate that the DNA tool was effective in identifying 100% of the individuals used in the present study, indicating that only two samples did not genetically correspond to B. rousseauxii, but B. capapretum, which has the same distribution as B. rousseauxii, although with very different morphological characteristics. All individuals collected in the supermarket and identified as “golden” were genetically identical to B. rousseauxii.
