The Amazon basin has the largest riverine flow on a global scale and recent studies indicate the Amazon River as the second river most polluted by plastics in the world. Although there are data on the occurrence of microplastics on continental shelves, there are few estimates of this pollution in waters on the Brazilian Continental Shelf, for the far north of the country data is inexistent. Thus, this work aims to analyze the distribution of microplastics in the surface waters of the Amazon Continental Shelf (PCA). Sampling was carried out in March 2018.Samples were collected at 25 stations along the Platform, through the capture of surface water and filtration in a plankton net with a 64 μm mesh. The estimated particle density in the water column ranged from 1.567 to 13.200 MPs.m-³. Fibers were the predominant type of particles found, corresponding to 56% of the total, followed by fragments, with 44%. Transparent fibers and blue fragments were the most abundant particles in PCA. No correlation was found between the amount of microplastic in the sampling stations and the distance from the coast or platform environmental variables. This is the first study to assess microplastic pollution in PCA waters, and, in addition to recording unprecedented values for adjacent regions, it demonstrates that stations near the Bay of São Marcos, the mouth of the Pará river and the mouth Amazon river are, expressively, the most polluted areas on the platform.
