The main objective was to analyze and understand the difficulties faced by atypical students in the process of reading and writing, especially those already in Elementary School. The research locus was a state public school. As a data collection instrument, a semi-structured interview was conducted with students from the institution, including those diagnosed with ASD, the target audience of this study. Based on the data obtained and the studies analyzed, it was possible to conclude that, despite the challenges, atypical students are capable of developing reading and writing through appropriate methods, using these skills to integrate socially and participate in community life.
