Peoples, traditional communities, family farmers, and their representative entities are responsible for preserving an important heritage of humanity, which is creole seeds; however, these seeds have been losing ground in agriculture. Thus, it is necessary to consider how important respect and care for traditional knowledge are in the conservation of creole seeds. The general objective of this study is to conduct an initial survey of guardians of creole seeds and to understand the conservation process undertaken by these actors in communities in the municipalities of Abaetetuba, Moju, and Igarapé-Miri. To achieve this, the specific objectives are: 1. To identify the communities and the actors responsible for the conservation of creole seeds in the aforementioned municipalities; 2. To understand the practices used in conservation and the purpose of these practices for the farmers; 3. To identify the main species being conserved; and 4. To understand possible changes or losses in local knowledge and in varieties of creole seeds in the studied territories. The research approach is qualitative-quantitative, with exploratory objectives, using field research methodology. Data collection was carried out from June 2024 to February 2025 through the application of online questionnaires, interviews, direct observation, and transect walks through the cultivation areas of the guardians. During the data collection process, visits were made to agricultural properties, where a great diversity of crops was observed. Among the main cultivated species were corn, cassava, beans, rice, banana, papaya, pineapple, watermelon, cacao, cupuaçu, among others. The methods used in conservation are diverse. In summary, they can be divided into activities that maintain seed viability through off-field storage—such as the use of plastic bottles—and cultivation practices in which seeds and propagules are preserved in the field and even in vivo, that is, through continuous cultivation cycles, as in the case of medicinal plants. The research revealed that the continuity of the tradition of conserving creole seeds is threatened by several factors, including the spread and promotion of hybrid, commercial, and genetically modified seeds, as well as the lack of interest among younger generations in maintaining family farming practices. The extinction of the practice of conserving creole seeds could lead to serious consequences, such as the loss of valuable traditional knowledge and the reduction of local agricultural biodiversity. Creole seeds, being adapted to specific environmental conditions, play a crucial role in maintaining resistance to diseases, pests, and climate change, making them essential for food security and agricultural sustainability.
