Acesso em:.http://bdm.ufpa.br/jspui/handle/prefix/1833Presents information on the suspended matter (SM) in the Guajará bay, a river system inserted into the Pará river estuary, strongly dominated by tides and adjacent to the city of Belém the state capital of Pará. Knowledge on the aspects of the suspended material provides a tool to assist the interpretation of the oceanographic dynamics and can act as an indicator of the sediment supply provinces, helping to understand the sedimentary evolution of the region. Sampling was carried out on the water surface, at four points on the right bank of the bay, destributed from the island of Cumbu (Guama river) to the hole Maguari (Guajará bay). Temporaly, the sampling occurred quarterly, along one year (December 2004 to September 2005), and for each point , totalizing 16 samples. After filtering the material, the filters were analyzed using electron microscopy (SEM) together with energy dispersive system (EDS), in the laboratory of electron microscopy (LABMEV) of the Museum Paraense Emilio Goeldi (MPEG), and diffraction x-rays, in the Geosciences Institute (GI) of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA).The analysis of the concentration of SM recorded a minimum of 2.5 mg / L and a maximum of 80mg / L, and the maximum was recorded in the rainy season. The SEM was used to analyze organic and inorganic constituents of SM. Through it was observed a rather homogeneous composition, consisting of: bioclasts, pennate and centric diatoms, clay minerals, heavy mineral particles (quartz and feldspar) and heavy mineral staurolite. The mineralogical studies performed with X-ray, recorded the presence of kaolinite, albite, illite and chlorite, and less frequently, the montmorillonite or smectite and feldspar.
