Furthermore, estuarine organisms are subject to different types of human activities that generate pollutants discharged into coastal regions. The bioavailability and toxicity of contaminants in the aquatic environment are influenced by changes in salinity. In the Bay of Japerica (northeastern Pará), mining activities cause damage to the environment and to nearby residents. This study is an evaluation of the responses of biochemical markers of exposure and effect analyzed in crab resident Ucides cordatus front of the seasonal fluctuations of the local salinity. The crabs were manually collected at two locations from Bay Japerica, a place with greater influence of saline water, lower estuary and Tapuã, upper estuary, located near the implantation region of a cement plant with pollution potential. Samples were collected during four periods: June/2013 (transition 1), September (dry season), November (transition 2) and February/2014 (rainy). Temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO) and salinity were measured during collection. The animals were length and weighed for total weight and width of the shell, gills and muscles were selected tissues. These tissues were measured biochemical biomarkers of exposure: total antioxidant capacity (ACAP) and activity of detoxification enzyme glutathione S-transferase (GST); and effect: determination of the content of oxidative damage in lipids (LPO). Abiotic data showed that temperature and pH no significant variation between sampling sites. Salinities showed variation both local and between collection periods. Tapuã show lower salinity values, but higher seasonal variation. The do levels were Tapuã were higher than Japerica. The ACAP both gills and in muscle has remained stable over the collection periods. The GST activity and lipid content in both tissues were higher in Tapuã the transition period and 2 in the rainy season, which is where there is greater variation in the salt gradient throughout the year. The results indicate that seasonal variations in salinity, together with the increased availability of contaminants and decrease the activity of biomarkers expose animals to effect these xenobiotics and consequent ecological damage.
