Acesso em: .https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/8423The community of Jacarequara is located in the municipality of Santa Luzia do Pará and is home to 273 people divided into 55 families who maintain various traditional cultural and economic practices, such as subsistence farming, extractivism, crafts, fishing, and agriculture, which are essential for sustainability and the preservation of their identity. Our research aimed to record and analyze the stories of women who handle medicinal herbs in this community, in order to analyze how they perceive their knowledge about the use of medicinal plants, and how and from whom they learned this art in the community. In this way, we conducted interviews with three women, named Alecrim, Arruda, and Cidreira, residents of the community who practice and preserve the art of healing through prayers and the preparation of home remedies using medicinal plants. We found that this knowledge is passed down through generations, generally by women who consider it very important, not only because it guarantees an additional source of income, but also because it serves a community that does not have easy access to the public health system. Born and raised in the community, these women work to maintain a tradition that is based on ancestral knowledge. Bringing these women's stories to the academic world involves us in a movement of resistance and affirmation of this knowledge, and also leads us to explore the peculiarities of an Amazon that is often unknown and underestimated. Traditional knowledge is knowledge of the forest, intrinsically linked to elements of nature, which, when activated by human beings, contributes to the restoration and maintenance of its health.
