Acesso em: .https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/4267The present work produced polymeric resin composites using the industrial waste of Red Mud (RM), with granulometries of 0, 100, 200, 325 and 400 mesh, to evaluate its physical properties, mechanics and flammability. The manual manufacturing method was hand lay-up, with compression in a metallic mold, and mass proportions of 10 % and 20 %. Was used isophthalic unsaturated polyester resin, linked to the initiator and cobalt activator in proportions of 1 % and 1,5 %, in v/v, respectively. The mineralogical analysis of the residue was carried out by the X-Ray Diffraction technique, the morphological analysis was carried out with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Optical Microscope (OM), and the chemical analysis was carried out through Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Physical tests were performed following the standards and guidelines established by ASTM D 570, ASTM D 2734 and ASTM D 792 for Water Absorption, Apparent Porosity and Apparent Specific Mass, respectively. The mechanical bending and tensile tests follow the ASTM D 790 and ASTM D 3039 standards, in due order. To carry out the flammability tests, the ASTM D 635 standard was used. Mineralogical, chemical and morphological analyzes of the residue indicated more intense peaks of hematite and sodalite, and more evident elements such as iron and titanium. Regarding the physical tests, the reduction of the granulometric ranges indicated a gradual decrease of water absorption and apparent porosity, and the apparent specific mass showed an increase in relation to the matrix. In most compositions and granulometries, the mechanical tests indicated an increase in tensile strength and even more expressive values for bending. Furthermore, the flammability of the manufactured composites indicated minimum burning rates in relation to the comparison standards, showing good flame resistance. The lowest burn rate obtained with the composition of 400 mesh and 20 % RM stood out, especially when comparing the established standards: ASTM D 635 and CONTRAN 498.
