The northern part of the country houses an important amount of the population under severe food insecurity. However, there is currently no registry system for real-time epidemiological data concerning this problem, which makes it difficult to take any effective interventive action to combat this problem. This study aims to develop a mobile application (“app”) for compulsory notification and monitoring of families in hunger. The first stage of this study consisted in a bibliographical survey to define which content was to be included in the app, alongside a requisite survey; both activities were undertaken by a multi-professional team from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). The second stage was implementing the app, together with the Institute of Exact and Nature Sciences, also from the Federal University of Pará. An app named “VIGIFOME” was successfully developed for mobile devices powered by the Android operating system. This tool is composed by simple interfaces, with friendly management, and allows for sorting and detection of severe food insecurity (according to the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale), also including monitoring of notified homes and case conclusion. VIGIFOME is a mobile application focused on the epidemiological surveillance of hunger and will allow mapping and systemizing of data regarding this problem. A usability study is intended to be conducted, in order to evaluate the aspects of efficacy, efficiency and satisfaction in relation to this tool.
