Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/10093This research investigates the role of the librarian and information mediation practices within the context of prison libraries in the state of Pará, focusing on actions carried out during the incarceration period of deprived-of-liberty individuals. The objective was to examine the librarian's role as a mediator regarding practices that foster access to information, reading, and knowledge, as well as their responsibilities regarding the social development of inmates. The study was qualitative and exploratory in nature, grounded in a literature review within the fields of Information Science and Social Librarianship, and complemented by a recorded and transcribed semi-structured interview with the only active librarian at the Pará State Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration (SEAP). The results highlight the existence of reading promotion projects—such as "Cine Literário" at the Ananindeua Female Custody and Reintegration Unit (UCRF)—and the implementation of the National Program for the Encouragement of Reading (ProLer). These initiatives, carried out in collaboration between the National Secretariat of Penal Policies (SENAPPEN) and SEAP, demonstrate the potential of prison libraries as spaces for education and access to knowledge. However, the research also identified challenges regarding library infrastructure, a lack of funds for acquiring new collection materials, the need to adapt spaces due to prison overcrowding, and limited access to libraries for inmates caused by a shortage of correctional officers available to escort them.
