The process of recognizing olfactory molecules is extremely refined, starting in the branches of the receptor cells of the nasal mucosa, passing through the olfactory bulb, until reaching more important processing regions, such as the olfactory cortex and the limbic system, integrating information with other senses, emotions, and memory. Loss or impairment of the sense of smell are pathological manifestations resulting from diseases with infectious, allergic, inflammatory, obstructive, traumatic, and other etiologies. Damage caused by olfactory dysfunctions can jeopardize the safety, well-being, and autonomy of the affected individual. That said, the objective of this research is to gather and evaluate treatment options for managing olfactory dysfunctions. To this end, a scoping review was conducted in the PUBMED, SCOPUS, SCIELO, and LILACS databases, using articles published between 2014 and 2024. The search terms were based on the descriptors “Therapeutics” and “Olfaction Disorders”. The screening was performed according to the author's criteria and using the recommendations of the PRISMA guideline. As for the results, it was possible to observe an increase in publications on the subject after 2020. The treatment options found varied between the use of corticosteroids and other drugs, olfactory training, use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), biological therapy, surgical intervention, phytotherapy, vitamin supplements, and alternative practices, such as acupuncture, laser, positive airway pressure (PAP), and experimental therapies. Olfactory training and nasal corticosteroids are the most effective therapies for olfactory dysfunction, especially post-viral infection. Therapies such as PRP, monoclonal antibodies, acupuncture and photobiomodulation have shown promising results, but require further studies for validation. In this context, further research is needed to evaluate existing therapeutic options and investigate other etiologies that cause olfactory dysfunction. It is essential to establish variables that allow more effective application of treatments, reduce divergences in the literature, and guide clinical decisions more consistently.
