Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9615The retention of quilombola students in medical degree programs constitutes a persistent challenge in Brazilian higher education, marked by intense racial, social, and territorial inequalities. In this context, this article analyzes, through a narrative literature review (2013–2024), the main obstacles and strategies that influence the academic trajectories of these students. This essay used publications available in the SciELO, BVS, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases to understand the factors associated with this phenomenon. The analysis indicated that structural and institutional racism, socioeconomic difficulties, and pedagogical and cultural neglect negatively impact the retention and academic performance of these students. According to the in-depth review, student assistance policies—such as internal Student Retention Scholarship Programs—and affirmative actions, including tutoring and mentoring initiatives aimed at academic support, contribute to the promotion of equity in higher education.
