Grounded in the principles of Variationist Sociolinguistics and Geolinguistics, the study aims to map and describe the occurrence of the palatalized variant [ʎ], considering its distribution across different linguistic and spatial contexts. The corpus was drawn from the database of the Geosociolinguistic Atlas of Quilombola Communities in Northeastern Pará (AGQUINPA), by Dias (2017), comprising eight speakers and 39 occurrences. The data were subjected to audio analysis, phonetic transcription, coding, and quantitative treatment with the aid of Goldvarb X, in addition to the cartographic representation of the investigated locations. The results showed a predominance of the palatalized variant [ʎ], corresponding to 76.9% of the occurrences, while the non-palatalized realization [l] represented 23.1%. Among the linguistic factors analyzed, higher frequencies were observed in word-initial position and in contexts preceded by the vowels /a/ and /i/. Regarding stress, the percentages were quite similar between pretonic and tonic positions. As for spatial distribution, palatalization showed high rates in the three locations considered, reaching 100% in the data from África and Laranjituba, 73.1% in Oxóssi da Ribeira, and 71.4% in Rio Acaraqui/Campompema. Considering the size of the corpus, the results describe the behavior observed in the sample and contribute to the description, documentation, and understanding of the linguistic diversity of Quilombola communities in the Lower Tocantins region.
