Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/8755This article analyzes the representation of public libraries in Pará in the press during the 1980s, with an emphasis on the newspapers O Liberal and Diário do Pará, available in the Brazilian Digital Newspaper Library. The bibliographic and documentary research seeks to understand how journalistic articles contributed to the construction of discourses on the social role of public libraries, government investments, and the challenges faced by professionals in the field. Based on the analysis of the reports, a narrative marked by dualities can be observed: while some articles highlighted initiatives such as the library car and itinerant services, others denounced structural precariousness, institutional abandonment, and the lack of appreciation for the work of librarians. The use of the Brazilian Digital Newspaper Library as a source provided access to a broad and diverse collection of digitized periodicals, facilitating research and preserving historical memory.
