The use of artificial irrigation reservoirs is an alternative to complement crop watering, especially in regions where climate change affects rainfall patterns. In this context, the installation of a dam, even a small one, is a complex process that involves various stages, from site selection to construction and operation of the structure. This study aimed to identify the alternative that provides the best safety conditions, considering slope stability and pore pressure criteria among different configurations for an irrigation dam in Goianésia do Pará. The methodology consists of a multi-step approach, starting with visits to the potential construction site, data collection, and literature review. In a subsequent stage, construction options were established based on the knowledge of the soil type and materials available in the municipality. The dam modeling was carried out using specialized software. For the analyses, one software was used to analyze fluid dynamics, and another to assess stability. From the analysis of all conditions, the safety factors achieved for the silty clay configuration were considerably satisfactory compared to the minimum required to ensure stability. When analyzing three distinct soil types, it was noted that the piezometric line exhibited similar patterns in all operational scenarios. This indicates that, even with variations in the physical and hydraulic characteristics of the soils, elements such as the dam's geometry and loading conditions have a significant impact on the hydraulic behavior of the structure. In all scenarios, the negative pore pressure in the upper part of the structure after filter installation, which decreases as drainage elements are arranged, indicates that the water pressure established by the reservoir is being adequately directed. From the study, it was concluded that the drainage system configuration has a considerable impact on controlling water levels and hydrostatic pressure in the dam. The structure with all drainage elements (dam with horizontal and vertical filters, toe drain, and relief wells) achieved the highest safety factor values, and the arrangement of these elements was crucial in providing a path with lower resistance to water, reducing the hydraulic gradient in the critical region of the dam and preventing internal erosion. It was identified that this would be the safest option for the project.
