Thus, this work aimed to characterize the buriti petiole fibers and incorporate them into a polymeric matrix for subsequent physical and mechanical testing, and fractographic analysis of the composites. The fibers were manually extracted and subjected to specific mass determination using the pycnometer method and morphological characterization via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Fabrication began with an orthophthalic polyester resin matrix, Butanox M-50 curing initiator at 1% (m/m), and buriti fiber in mass fractions of 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7%, in addition to a control (0%), using the hand lay-up method in a silicone mold with an applied compression of 24.03 N. The produced composites were subjected to physical tests for Water Absorption (WA), Apparent Porosity (AP), and Apparent Density (AD), following ASTM D570, ASTM D2734, and ASTM D792 standards, respectively. Tensile and flexural mechanical tests were performed in accordance with ASTM D638 and ASTM D790 standards, respectively. Fractographic analyses of the tensile and flexural composites were also performed via SEM. The specific mass of the fiber was 0.489 g/cm³, a value compatible with porous materials, and the analyzed fiber showed a rough morphology with the presence of lumens and striations. In the physical tests of the composites, an increase in WA and AP was observed after fiber insertion due to their hydrophilic nature; however, a reduction in AD was observed, imparting greater lightness to the material. In the tensile and flexural mechanical tests, the fibers acted predominantly as filler in the matrix, presenting a decrease in strength at initial contents; however, the 7% fraction achieved performance recovery, reaching tensile strength statistically similar to the neat matrix. Fractographic analysis revealed the presence of voids and adhesion failures at the fiber-matrix interface. Thus, the performance of the buriti fiber enables applications as a functional filler in components requiring lower weight and sustainable appeal.
