Acesso em: .https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9980This article aimed to identify and analyze the lexical variations of the expression “mau cheiro” from the perspective of Variationist Sociolinguistics in the city of Bragança/PA. Its specific objectives were to examine these variants in relation to factors such as the age group, sex/gender, and socioeconomic status of the participants, as well as to contribute to language teaching and learning through diatopic "regional" variation. Using field research as the methodology involving both quantitative data and qualitative questions obtained through semi-structured interviews the study draws on authors such as Tarallo and Altmam (1987), Prodanov and Freitas (2013), and Marconi and Lakatos (2018). Based on this, the theoretical framework is grounded mainly in the studies of Alkmim (2001), Labov (2008), Mollica (2015), Coelho (2015), Machado (2024), and Costa (2024), which guided the entire research process. Finally, the study identified the occurrence of different lexical variants such as fedendo, fedor, pitiú, and fedida, alongside less frequent forms like inhaca, catinga, and murrinha, which proved to be important in specific moments across various situations. Thus, it was particularly observed that the variant pitiú showed a strong relationship with cultural aspects linked to fishing activities.
