Among these forms, methylmercury (MeHg) is the most dangerous. It is naturally present in soil and is released into the atmosphere and hydrosphere through human activities. Northern Brazil is an area with high levels of mercury. This metal, in its inorganic form, when it comes into contact with water, undergoes a process of biotransformation and enters the food chain at the base. Once in the food chain, aquatic biota becomes the main route of transfer of mercury from a contaminated environment to humans, especially for populations whose diet is based on the consumption of fish. In this context, the inhabitants of Terra do Meio, in the Amazon rainforest, with their typical riverine way of life, with their diet based on local fishing, are subject to environmental exposure to mercury. This study analyzed 182 riverine inhabitants, revealing a population with high socioeconomic vulnerability. The prevalence of symptoms related to mercury poisoning in the results reveal a strong association between this exposure and the occurrence of poisoning symptoms. The results reinforce the urgent need for mitigation strategies and continuous health monitoring in affected communities, as well as additional research to better understand the impacts of mercury poisoning.
