Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/jspui/handle/prefix/2353The present work approaches the traditional knowledge, emphasizing the knowledge regarding the use of citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus) in the Tauerá de Beja community, making a counterpoint to the chemical analysis of the plant, to legitimize this pertinent knowledge in the community. The present work aimed to collect information about how is the practical use of citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus) by residents; extract essential oil from Cymbopogon nardus leaves by hydrodistillation; Calculate the essential oil yield of the leaves of Cymbopogon nardus and identify the chemical constituents extracted from the leaves of Cymbopogon nardus by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC / MS), to make possible inferences from the survey of plant use in community. The research was developed through literature review, chemical analysis and interviews with subsidy of a script containing 7 guiding questions. From the data obtained they were analyzed and interpreted in a quantitative descriptive and qualitative manner which will be presented as graphs, map, table and tables. When comparing the data obtained through the interviews with the major chemical constituents that make up the citronella grass, we can infer that the citronellal is one of the constituents present with a higher percentage, being (30.70%) and geraniol with (13.67 %). With this the citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus) has a high performance as insect repellent, fungicide and bactericide.
